Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

The PCGL has incorporated Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) from its beginning: the Data Diversity and Inclusion working group aims to build a comprehensive understanding of the diversity in Canadian genomic data collections, identify factors relevant to participation in genomic research for diverse groups, and develop guidance documents for the PCGL’s team members regarding best practices to incorporate EDI principles in genomic research.

EDI Action Plan

The PCGL’s EDI Action Plan was informed by findings from a narrative review of EDI-related institutional documentation in Canada. The goal of the PCGL’s EDI Action Plan for 2025 to 2028 is to outline the PCGL’s commitment to embed EDI principles throughout its community, tools and processes.

Reference Survey for the Collection of Participant Sociodemographic Data

As part of its commitment to equity in genomics, the Pan-Canadian Genome Library (PCGL) is developing national standards for collecting, depositing, and sharing individual-level sociodemographic data to support data harmonization and reproducible research on social determinants of health in Canada. This survey represents an integral part of these efforts, introducing a Pan-Canadian standard for harmonized sociodemographic data collection and reporting in alignment with Canadian and international guidelines. Importantly, this work reflects the 2021 resolution adopted by the 74th World Health Assembly (WHA74.16), which encourages Member States to integrate social determinants of health into public policies and programmes.
